The purpose of the Red Ribbon Week Campaign is to make an open commitment to a safe, healthy & drug-free life. The campaign is designed to accomplish the following:

  • create awareness concerning the problems related to the use of tobacco, alcohol and other drugs
  • support the decision to live a healthy, drug-free lifestyle.

Red Ribbon Week began in 1988 to honor DEA Agent Enrique Camarena, who was kidnapped & killed in Mexico in 1985. Agent Camarena had uncovered a multi-billion dollar drug scam in which he suspected officers of the Mexican Army, police forces & government. As he left his office one day, 5 men appeared & kidnapped him. His body was found 1 month later in  a shallow  grave; he had been tortured & beaten.

The first Red Ribbon Week was pro-claimed in 1988 by the U.S. Congress in support  of Agent Camarena and the cause he gave his life for-combating drugs. The week is marked by wearing a red ribbon  to send the message to be drug & alcohol free!

During Red Ribbon Week, SADD members pass out red ribbons to students at the school. Wearing the ribbons shows students are making the choice to be drug & alcohol free. Each day after passing out ribbons, SADD members go around as the "Red Ribbon Patrol" & hand out candy to students still wearing their ribbons.
